Gilligan Moss return with another joyous track—this time in collaboration with their friend Holiday87. A perfect soundtrack to the first few days of Spring where the flowers start to shake off winter, this one sounds almost as joyful as the first time riding a bike with no hands or cashing your first paycheck from a summer job.

Opening with mournful yet triumphant strings and flute, the track blossoms into a psychedelic rollercoaster ride of a pop song. Featuring an undeniably catchy bass line (courtesy of The Knocks’ JPatt), and a seemingly endless mirage of instruments, voices and samples that come in and out of focus throughout the track ‘New Best Friend’ will stay on your mind like a hazy memory from a beautiful day. At once wistful and nostalgic and absolutely, positively, joyful ‘New Best Friend’ channels The Avalanches, late ’60’s AM Pop Radio and Tame Impala in equal measure for something truly unique.

“NBF came about on a writing trip with our friend Ben (Holiday87, The Knocks). It was a very natural feeling collaboration and unlike many of our other songs, most of the parts came quickly then all at once. It’s a tune about how we locate ourselves through the trends of our time, and the inevitability of the clock moving forward. The lyrics were written while eating a large Cafe Panna ice cream sundae.” says Gilligan Moss about the track.

Gilligan Moss is Ben & Evan. Friends since meeting at Park West Preschool in Chicago at age three. Their first musical collaboration was a spectacular performance at a summer camp in the northern woods of Wisconsin which has been widely bootlegged and shared amongst collectors though has yet to see an official release. Since reconnecting in 2015 they’ve written some songs, made some remixes and released their debut self titled album on Foreign Family Collective. They’ve appeared live touring with the likes of ODESZA, Glass Animals, Elderbrook, Tourist and Toro y Moi.

The music they make is jubilant and fun—drawing from a shared love of music both old and new spanning a wide swath of genres. Their music sounds best with a chilled glass of wine and close friends, but also sounds excellent while filling out excel spreadsheets, doing laundry and staying out way too late at the club with friends and enemies alike. They are currently working on new music and perfecting recipes for a cookbook.

Most recently Gilligan Moss wrapped up a tour supporting ODESZA on their ‘The Last Goodbye Tour’ and are hard at work on new music. Their recent single ‘Love Song’ has received incredible support from BBC1, BBC6 & KCRW, landing just outside of the top ten adds on KCRW for two weeks.

Holiday87 is Ben Ruttner, 1/2 of the acclaimed New York duo The Knocks. Ben got his start competing in DJ scratch competitions and has produced for a number of Hip-Hop icons and innovators including Mobb Deep, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and The Game. Along the way he met James “JPatt” Patterson and founded the globally renowned electronic duo The Knocks. With The Knocks Ben has released 3 albums and 5 EPs, performed numerous times on US Late Night TV shows including Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers and collaborated with artists from many points along the musical spectrum such as MGMT, ODESZA, Sofi Tukker, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX. Alongside his work with The Knocks Ben also founded and operates the record labels Black Clay and HeavyRoc Music.

During time spent in upstate New York in 2020 Ben launched his solo project Holiday87 to channel his earliest interests in music and get back to the youthful joy of creating without any parameters. Mining his past making music on a 6-track cassette recorder in rural New Hampshire (influenced by sampling pioneers such as DJ Shadow, The Avalanches, Gorillas and Fatboy Slim) Holiday87 looks to the future of music through the lens of the past, balancing the nostalgic with the timeless and forward thinking.
